Sapphic Owl

Now you may or may not now this, but I am a hardcore iPhone fan girl. I had one on AT&T and I moved to T-Mobile for financial reasons. I thought I could be without one. Turns out I didn’t like the G1 or MyTouch3G as much as I thought I would. I ended up selling my G1, buying an iPhone2g, using an upgrade on one of my lines to get a MyTouch and trading it, so that I could reunite with the iPhone3g. I gave my little sister my 2g to show my appreciation for her doing well in school. For the record she got nothing less than one “C” on her report card and has gotten no less than a “B” on her math tests. While perusing my favorite phone blog, The iPhone Blog, I came across a thread in the forum soliciting members’ five favorite applications. That got me to thinking about what mine were and I decided to share them here. I know this has no relation to the subject matter of most of my posts, but I’m a real tech geek, so it’s pertinent to me. And my blog is about me, isn’t it?
App Store Facebook-No explanation necessary. The 3.0 updates made it even better than before. If you use Facebook, I also suggest MyPhone+. It searches for overlaps in your contacts and Facebook friends and updates their contact info, complete with birthdays and contact photo for you. I got it when it was free, but I honestly I think it’s worth the $2.99 price tag. It’s kept me from a lot of manual updates to my contacts.Tweet Deck- What would a top five be without mentioning a Twitter client? I love having columns to differentiate tweets, direct messages (DM’s), and mentions. In Tweet Deck for iPhone, they’re just a slide away and the fact that it shows you how many unread DM’s, mentions and tweets there have been since the last login is useful. I’ve tried Twetie, Echofon (the former Twitterfon), qTweeter (a jailbroken hack), Twitterific and at least half a dozen apps/widgets for the AndroidOS. Tweet Deck is most pleasing to me. The color scheme also matches my blog. :]Remote- Controlling my or someone else’s iTunes from anywhere in the house saves time/energy/encourages laziness. It’s especially useful for when I’m studying or laying down.Shazam-I never have to not know what song I’m listening to, ever again. It’s getting increasingly good and identifying indie/mixtape songs, I’m guessing because of it’s integration with lyric engines and YouTube.Epocrates- Looking up drugs, their interactions, prices etc. Perfect for medical professionals or even someone who just happens to be on a few medications. I’m a budding med professional AND happen to be on a handful of meds, which I like to check before taking something OTC or certain foods and this is invaluable. It’s also useful for deciding whether I should buy prescriptions from an outside or VA pharmacy when money’s kinda tight.Last.fm- I find it better than Pandora and the ability to look at my profile and see what I was listening to, even on the go is great. It also helps my memory, much in the same way that Twitter does. Jailbroken Qik-This is an app that could easily be sold in the App Store for $5. It’s basically a YouTube that you can stream to your own channel, live. When I’m not sure how long something I’m gonna record is gonna be or I don’t feel like plugging in to get a video from Cycorder, I just record directly to my page and use a Firefox extension to rip the video to my desktop.Winterboard- Customize your iPhone or iPod Touch. ‘Nuff said.SBsettings- Quick toggles, hiding apps.Cycorder- Recording video.Five Icon Dock- It’s not so much an app as it is a hack. Having an extra icon at the bottom is nothing dire, but, it’s cool.
