I had the pleasure yesterday of being invited to the demo day for the startups that were selected by Launchbox Digital to participate in their summer startup program. There were nine of them in all that were selected out of a pool of over 250 applicants. Those 9 received funding and guidance to take their big ideas from concept to market. There was a great variety of ideas selected.
The demo day was help at the offices of Cooley Godward in the Reston Town Center. Ot was a chance for the group to show off their products to some local media and more importantly some are investors. Here is a list of the companies and links to their web sites for you to stop by and check out.
All of them did a great job, but there were a couple that really stood out and we should all keep our eye out for big things. JamLegend I think has the potential to be HUGE. It is an online Guitar Hero with multiplayer playing, indie music platform, and all in all, lots of fun. Sharememe also has a lot of potential as a type of intelligent messaging system with a wealth of other great features.
Stay tuned for some indiviadual posts and reviews on some of the products I found particularly interesting.
Overall it was a great job by the Launchbox team picking and mentoring along the group. I spoke with Sean Greene, one of the founders, and he was very happy how things had progressed. He talked about how impressed he was by each team and also their willingness to work together to help each other through issues they may have been having. He told me they are very much looking forward to Launchbox09, and so are we.
In some exciting news for Washington DC residents, the Washington Post has a story detailing a deal has been struck between Verizon and the District to bring the fiber service, FIOS, to the District.
Eric E. Richardson, director of the D.C. Office of Cable Television, said the agreement requires approval by the mayor’s office and the D.C. Council, a process that could be completed “by the end of this year.” Still, it may be some time before consumers get the service.
Many District residents have been clamoring for the service as the surrounding areas in MD and VA have been enjoying the fast fiber service. Many are surprised that the nations capitol was behind in this area.
How about you, do you live in the District ? And will you be looking to upgrade to FIOS when it comes your way ? I know I certainly would …
Anyone who is starting a small business knows the importance of finding those little pieces of help in saving them a few bucks here and there. I came across some great cost savings tips in a post over at Found and Read, a GiaOM blog, titled “15 Sites to Cut Your Startup Operating Costs“.
They have pulled together some great sites offering help in this area, with ideas like the following:
So if you are looking for some solid ideas to help you on your startup journey, head over to check out the post. And we would love to hear any of your ideas as well ! Leave them in the comments to help out our other readers.
According to the event page, this event is back by popular demand, and judging by the last events I was at there is not a more true statement. There was a ton of people at the last one and I am sure this one will be no different. Space is limited so make sure to get over and sign up soon to reserve your spot!
Many of us know the local community continues to grow and grow and this event is a great place to connect with others looking for jobs, cofounders, or employees to round out your growing company.
The event brings in members from around the DC creative, startup, social media and tech community for what some like to call an open mic night for hiring teams and entrepreneurs and others call speed dating for geeks. The open format is a fusion of startup job fair and networking event. Attendees include hiring teams representing top startup companies from around the DC area, job seekers, founders with entrepreneurial ideas looking for others to join them, and people interested in getting into the mix. This event will have seats available for the first 65 to arrive, after that it will be standing room only.
Each company that is presenting has a quick 2 minutes to talk about their company and any the type of jobs they have to fill. After that there is a general networking session for all to mingle and make those high power deals.
As we all know, there has been an incredible amount of buzz around the recent release of the 3G iPhone, and I think even more importantly, the release of the iPhone 2.0 firmware which brought us the ability to install third part applications. I have downloaded ab installed my fair share and am weeding out the keepers as they say. As I go along I want to take some time to pass along the ones I feel are above the noise and well worth the install on your iPhone.
I had been very excited at the outset to get ahold of some apps that would work with the camera to upload pics to many of the online services. One of the first ones I tried was SmugShot, the app to integrate with your SmugMug account. While I am huge SmugMug fan, many of us know that the masses are on flickr, and least causally. The other day I saw someone had uploaded a photo to flickr with AirMe, so I headed over the the App Store and downloaded it, all free. I must say I have been pretty impressed with the app. It does exactly what I want it to do, all with very little fuss. Connecting it to my Flickr account was a breeze.
Today I was out with and decided to give it a good go. I took a few pics and let it upload to Flickr. I had a pretty slow connection, so I decided to wait till I got home to check out my handy work. The pics looked great and something caught my attention as I browsed through them, the tags. I was pretty showed to see that the AirMe app had done great in tagging the pics with my location, city, that it was taken from an iPhone, the AirMe tag, and also something that really surprised me, the current weather conditions. Apparently it interface with the Weatherbug app also installed and got a quick snapshot of the conditions and put them in as tags also.
This is pretty good integration. In looking at the apps home page, it looks like that have some other nice features on the way:
Our 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3 versions have a lot of cool features, like:
- more smart tags
- Exif data - yes, tons of custom data coming
- add/change/delete title/tags to photo post upload
- upload from existing camera roll (we put the new AirMe photos in the roll!)
- delete only on iphone, only on Flickr (or your destination site), or all (currently the app deletes on both)
- add Picasa, Photobucket, Facebook, MySpace, Orkut
- and, many more to come!
I would totally recommend this app to anyone with the iPhone and wants a easy way to upload their mobile pics to flickr with no more effort than snapping the moment.
